The Inpatient Psychiatry Ward Chief has clinical and administrative oversight of the Boise VA Medical Center 11-bed acute inpatient unit. The physician will carry a limited caseload and provide consultation to Behavioral Health, Primary Care, and other clinical programs in the Boise VA Healthcare system, community agencies who provide care to our veterans, and other clinicians within VISN 20 with whom we have established relationships for providing care for our veterans. Duties include but are not limited to: Serves as the Team Leader of the multidisciplinary acute inpatient psychiatry team. Helps shape the culture on the locked unit to provide recovery oriented, veteran-centric, therapeutic, team-based care that balances safety with the veteran's individual autonomy. Sets a tone for staff, trainees, and patients that fosters compassion, kindness, humility, and "I CARE" values. Fosters a unit culture in which the use of physical restraints and/or seclusion is rare. Ensures that the Environment of Care on the unit is continuously reassessed and that mitigation strategies are in place to optimize safety. Oversees the transition of moving from a locked voluntary unit to a locked unit with a mixed population of both voluntary and involuntary patients. Provides direct clinical care of all the patients on the unit unless otherwise arranged by a designee. Completes a Psychiatric Evaluation for each patient within 24 hours of admission (personally or by a designee). Ensures that History and Physical exams are completed within 24 hours of admission by either the assigned nurse practitioner or designated psychiatrist covering the unit on weekends/holidays. Completes daily progress notes for all admitted patients (personally or by a designee). Conducts daily multidisciplinary rounds with the treatment team. Monitors the quality and safety issues on the unit and recommends changes as indicated. Updates the Ward 2P Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) as needed. Maintains effective working relationships/collaborative communication with 2P staff, Emergency Department staff, BH staff, and Boise VAMC staff and clinicians. Collaborates with multidisciplinary stakeholders in our Behavioral Health Service, the Medical Center, our local community outside the VA, and VISN regarding referrals to and from our inpatient psychiatry unit. Fields triage phone calls and in-person potential referrals for admission. Serves on relevant committees (e.g., serves as Chair for the Behavioral Health Environment of Care Committee). Maintains an educationally rich environment on the unit for trainees, and serves as clinical supervisor of medical students, PA students, NP students and other trainees rotating on the unit. Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm Financial Disclosure Report: Not required This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.
